Anubis heeft meerdere rollen voor de aanhangers van Kemet. Als Heer van het heilige land leidt hij zielen naar het leven na de dood. Als Oordeel, weegt hij het hart van de overledene en staat de ziel toe om door te reizen naar het leven na de dood, of verdoemt hij de ziel om opgeslokt te worden. Als Hij die de Weg Opent, is hij degene die belast is om er voor te zorgen dat alle doden uiteindelijk bij de goden terecht komen. Dit zorgt er voor dat hij vaak lijnrecht tegenover de Voogden staat, die de zielen van hun volgers zelf opeisen, en Anubis daarom zien als een dief en een plaag.

Anubis serves many goals to the faithful of Kemet. As Lord of the Sacred Land, he is a shepherd for departed souls. As Judgement, he evaluates the worth of a soul’s heart, either allowing it to pass on or destroying it utterly. As Opener of the Way, Anubis is charged with ensuring that all of the souls of the dead come to the gods. This duty puts him at odds with the Guardians who lay their own claims on the souls of their faithful and see Anubis as a thief and a fiend.
